Bangkok, Jumada II 15, 1433, May 6, 2012, SPA - Thailand's Prime Minister on Sunday visited the site of an explosion and fire at a petrochemical plant as the death toll rose to 12, local media reported.
Yingluck Shinawatra inspected the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate where the Bangkok Synthetics Co plant burned for more than four hours Saturday after an explosion.
Nine people died in the blast and fire and three more died later in hospital, according to a report of DPA.
More than 100 people were injured and 24 of them remained in hospital on Sunday, said Deputy Public Health Minister Surawit Khonsomboon.
The thousands of people in nearby communities evacuated during the fire had returned home Sunday.
The industrial estate 220 kilometres south-east of Bangkok was established in 1988 and is a hub of the Thai petrochemical industry.
