A verdict has been set in the case of three men standing trial for allegedly smuggling 50kg of hashish to Bahrain from Iran.

Two others are accused of helping them by providing a boat and sailor, while a sixth is charged with dealing in the drug.

It is understood the Bahrainis sold 32kg of hashish before they were caught last month, with the remaining 18kg and a large amount of cash were seized.

The defendants, between 29 and 45, are said to have confessed to their role in the operation to prosecutors. However, they earlier pleaded not guilty at the High Criminal Court.

One of them, a 31-year-old, was also charged with possessing hashish, while three others were also accused of using the drug.

According to case files, three of the men, all aged 31, initially attempted to smuggle 100kg of the drug from Iran, but settled for half. They came into the country by boat at the beach in Demistan. Investigations led police to one of the men and during a sting operation, the 29-year-old agreed to sell the drug for BD650 to an undercover officer.

Police arrested him and found 18 pieces of hashish in his apartment in Juffair and the rest of the drug stashed at his Sitra house. The trial was adjourned until September 4 for a verdict.
