Germany earmarks aid for Syrian refugees

Kuwait News Agency - 06 July, 2012

The German Government has earmarked euro 500,000 for Syrian refugees bringing total financial aid that has been allocated by Berlin to the Syrians affected with the violence to euro 8.5 million.

The Germany Foreign Ministry quoted, in a statement issued on Friday, the minister, Guido Westerwelle, as saying the Berlin government would continue to secure aid for the Syrians who have been suffering from plights caused by the ongoing armed conflict in their country.

The government holds the Syrian regime responsible for the continuing violence, Westerwelle said, urging Damascus to halt the bloodshedding, immediately, and allow dispatch of humanitarian aid to the citizens in need for help.

Westerwelle, who is taking part in the broad conference for "friends of Syria," hosted by Paris today, urged the Syrian opposition parties to be united and brush aside difference for sake of pursuing the armed struggle against the regime of Bashar Al-Assad.

The official reiterated Berlin's robust opposition to "external military intervention" in Syria, warning such an option would lead to spillover of the violence to neighboring countries and result in escalation of the conflict.
