Kuwait still working with US to release Guantanamo detainees: FM unsec.

Kuwait News Agency - 12 July, 2012

The Kuwaiti government is still working with the US authorities to release Kuwaiti detainees in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Khalid Sulaiman Al-Jarallah reiterated on Thursday.

"The efforts will be ongoing until the detainees are freed," Al-Jarrallah told the press on the fringes of Switzerland's 721st national day anniversary celebrated here at the Swiss embassy late Wednesday.

Al-Jarrallah seized this celebratory opportunity, which he attended, to laud the Kuwaiti-Swiss ties where he described them at "strong, exceptional and advanced."

Switzerland is internationally well-renowned on the monetary level; therefore, there is a great deal of cooperation between the Kuwaiti and the Swiss monetary institutes.

Al-Jarrallh said Switzerland is a mecca for Kuwaiti tourists during the summer holiday.
"We are friends with Switzerland," he stressed. "The Kuwaiti government pays utmost attention to nurture and develop these political ties in order to build more solid foundation between the two countries," he continued.

On the Syrian crisis and the international and regional stir it caused, Al-Jarrallah noted that "the State of Kuwait 'truly' wants to have a participatory role in supporting and pushing forward the peace plan of the UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan."

Kuwait hopes for Annan's plan to see the light and will keep engaging in all international efforts that seek a stop for this daily horrifying bloodshed in Syria.

Furthermore, Al-Jarrallah shed light on that the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's recent comments on the smooth process of Iraq paying its Gulf War-era debt to Kuwait by saying that "the compensation process is very well organized and follows a specific timeframe." The UN chief's comfortableness of the process is a major indicator that everything is going as planned.

On the matter of the maintenance of Kuwaiti-Iraqi border markers, the top Kuwaiti official noted that delegations for Iraq and the UN came to Kuwait to discuss the matter and it is expected to finish up this process in October.

Al-Jarrallah reassured that Mubarak harbor construction is going underway with no obstacles despite some statements from Iraqi officials who said that they will seek the International Court if Kuwaitis violated any of the agreements regarding the Mubarak harbor.

It is worth mentioning that the constructing of Mubarak seaport in April 2011 which raises discontent for the Iraqi political and economic people who considers it as overtaking over the Iraqi marine rights.
