'Arab Spring' - or 'Looting the Arabs?' |

This week I had the privilege of attending an exclusive Ramadan gathering at His Highness Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister's majlis, where The Prime Minister was visiting.
He spoke directly about the situation in Bahrain and how our people should be very aware of foreign infiltration and mockery which is misguiding certain youngsters in the name of democratisation.
While The Prime Minister was speaking, I recalled how Americans, which always boast about democratising the world, have in fact toppled many democratic regimes to serve the interests of a few in power - or its infamous 'Committee of 300".
What follows will give readers a broad idea about how some (and I mean a few) American adventurers create tragedies for weaker nations.
It is not a fabricated story, but fact from the files of history - although it took place almost 60 years ago.
Kermit (Kim Roosevelt) was a political action officer of the Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) directorate of planning, who co-ordinated Operation Ajax. This aimed to orchestrate a coup d'etat against Iran's Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadeq in 1953.
Although British intelligence had earlier wanted America's collaboration in toppling Mossadeq in 1951, immediately after he nationalised the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, President Harry S Truman ruled out joining London in a coup attempt because he saw Mossadeq as nationalist. However, Truman's successor President Dwight Eisenhower, was persuaded by the two brothers John Foster Dulles and Alan Dulles. John was Foreign Secretary and his brother head of the CIA. They convinced him that this action would outflank the Communist Party who were surrounding Mossadeq (It was a false assumption).
Shamefully recorded by history is how Kim Roosevelt poured millions of dollars into the hands of pimps, prostitutes, hooligans and thugs to demonstrate and attack government and private institutions, brandishing slogans like 'Death to Mossadeq and His Government'. So the green cash dollar played its role.
According to Roosevelt, he slipped across the border under CIA cover as 'James Lockridge' in June 1953, then helped by British intelligence to rent a house in Tehran and open contacts with the mob along with a few Iranian officers, to implement the coup.
So the American dollar solved the problem of the day as far as America's government was concerned. It little realised that it was paving the way to the disaster of the 1978-79 revolution!
In 2003 William Blum in his book Killing Hope (chronicling US military and CIA interventions since World War Two) criticised Roosevelt for his disastrous operation, a view shared by many honourable men in intelligence, including the head of the CIA in Iran who resigned rather than take part in such an immoral act.
Back in Bahrain, we know that the US Foreign Office never transfers large sums of money in cash, unless it is to finance covert operations. So quoting Ernest Hemmingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls, we ask 'For Whom is the $ 11 million'?
It is now quite clear to all that the Arab Spring was not sprung, but planned, prepared, recruited and trained for, utilising the very modern skills of highly qualified experts in toppling the governments.
His Highness the Prime Minister was right when he said: "I thank the wise people of Bahrain, I thank every journalist and columnist, I thank every reader for their never-ending letters to the national paper. From Bahrainis to expatriates, they showed and explained their concern that this peaceful society should not be disturbed by foreign intruders".
They are the real guardians of this society, he said. "Bahrain is a cosmopolitan society where freedom of thought, belief and worship is the right of all.
"We are an international society known around the globe as a community of moderation and tolerance."
It is important for the world to see how Bahrain and GCC societies have been developed and how the share of wealth has expanded not only via accumulation of cash, but through education, health services and industrious effort, he said.
As I was there, I remarked to The Prime Minister: "Your Highness, in the United States and probably even in Britain, the real wealth lies in the hands of less than one-and-a-quarter per cent, while 10 per cent are well-to-do. The rest of the populations of both countries manage to maintain certain standards on very tight budgets. In the GCC the span of wealth exceeds 25 per cent of its population".
His Highness said: "Bahrainis have travelled a lot and seen many corners of this world. Those who travel can afford it financially, but what is more important is to observe mentally the hardships other nations are going through. That will make them appreciate what a fair society they are living in - that in this hard and harsh economical era they can plan their vacations ahead. Is that not a reflection of a well-to-do society? All of you should ingrain a national commitment to protect what you have achieved and what your country has given to you".
As I left the majlis, while driving back to my office late at night, I reflected sadly that we have in our society men who ask every Thursday morning that on Friday "we have the right to launch 25 demonstrations in different places'. Rights to delay traffic, rights to burn tyres, rights to spill oil on roads to cause accidents, and rights to attack policemen who only want to maintain law and order.
But they never ask for the rights to plant trees on highways, to organise our youth, to clean roads and villages, to be serious about education and offer a helping hand - not a harming one?
Only when a nation adapts itself to such commitments can a brighter tomorrow emerge.
And by the way, this postscript is very essential. Who will inherit the frozen billions of Saddam Hussain, Zain Al Abeedeen bin Ali, Muammar Gadaffi, Hosni Mubarak and Bashar Al Assad? This money is now frozen in the coffers of Western banking institutions. Will it ever be given back to the people of those countries? History has shown NEVER!
In other words, is this an Arab Spring or Operation Loot The Arabs?
